Avril Lavigne

From early childhood onwards, Avril Lavigne always stood out among the 5000 residents of Napanee, Ontario -- her 1984 birthplace. At first distinguished from her female peers because of her affinity for the baseball field in the summer and the hockey rink in the winter, Avril became recognizable in the community on the basis of her musical performances.

By age 10, she had graduated from the local church choir to the regional fairgrounds, singing country music in competitions. Three years later, Avril began making her impact outside of Napanee, as her vocal skill won her the grand prize in a radio station contest: a trip to the city of Ottawa, to perform a duet in concert with another Ontario native, country music star Shania Twain. While this probably ranked as the pinnacle of pubescence for any other 13-year-old girl, Avril went on to accomplish far greater things before leaving adolescence.

By the time Avril reached high school, her vocal prowess seemed rivaled only by her ability to play the guitar, and she began sending videotapes of her stage performances to labels and management companies throughout North America. Following a host of rejections, her talent eventually caught the eyes of Nettwerk Management, an organization that fostered other such Canadian acts as Sarah McLachlan, Sum 41 and Barenaked Ladies.

Nettwerk arranged for Avril to fly down to New York City to meet with some other songwriters and begin work on a demo tape. As it turned out, Avril was signed before she even had a chance to complete the demo. An Arista Records representative came to visit Avril at her studio, and was sufficiently impressed with her voice to return with Arista CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid, who immediately signed the then 16-year-old to a contract.

After briefly returning to Canada, Avril made the move to Manhattan to embark on her professional career, accompanied by her older brother Matt as an escort. Although she had been signed to Arista strictly as a vocalist, Avril balked at the notion of singing someone else's songs and insisted on having a hand in the writing process. When she failed to click with any New York-based songwriters, Avril made her third move of the year, this time to Los Angeles.

It was on the West Coast that she met producer/songwriter Cliff Magness, with whom she immediately developed a rapport. The two began composing together, and within a few months' time, Avril's debut album had begun to take shape.

Avril's first single, "Complicated," was released in the early spring of 2002, and immediately began scaling the charts across the continent. By the summer, the track had reached the top spot among Canadian singles, and was in the top 15 on the Billboard Adult 40 list. The popularity of "Complicated" paved the way for the success of Avril's first full-length CD, Let Go, which debuted at #8 on the Billboard charts in June 2002.

While Avril's vocal range and high-energy musical style has brought her comparisons ranging from Alanis Morissette to Pink, she has been adamant in positioning herself as a unique artist, one who runs counter to the mainstream. This persona has been nurtured thanks to the lyrics of such songs as "Sk8er Boi," wherein Avril is none too subtle in voicing her anti-conformist stance, and through her public remarks regarding other female musicians, notably Britney Spears.

It is a formula which, to date, has worked like a charm: for a debut artist, Avril boasts a staggering fan base, and the media interest surrounding this young singer seems far from receding. Conjoin this one-of-a-kind personality with a memorable voice and obvious musical talents, and it seems as if Avril may be in the spotlight for some time to come.

Some of us may beg to differ, but Avril Lavigne's third album will be The Best Damn Thing. That would be the title of her third LP, but now on the fact that it will be released on April 17. April is also the French equivalent of the pint-sized starlet's first name, for all of you bilingualism buffs.

In a press release utilizing spelling and grammar expertise unknown to Lavigne, Sony BMG also let us know that the "defiantly rocking 'Girlfriend'" will be the first official single from the album. The Lavigne and Dr. Luke co-written song will hit the airwaves on Feb. 19, while its video will follow one week later.

The album will also feature "Keep Holding On," the power ballad that Lavigne co-wrote with Dr. Luke that's now playing on a radio near you somewhere. The song was first heard in the recently released fantasy/adventure film, Eragon.

Other cuts confirmed to appear on The Best Damn Thing are the title track, "I Can Do Better," "When You're Gone" and "Innocence."

Lavigne received production help on the LP from Butch Walker, Dr. Luke, Rob Cavallo and her husband, Sum 41's Deryck Whibley.

Budin seorang yang amat benci pada kucing, entah apa silap yang telah dibuat oleh kucing padanya tiada siapa yang tahu. Walaupun begitu, jodoh pertemuan sememangnya ketentuan Ilahi, Budin bertemu jodoh dengan Gayah yang sememangnya amat suka dan cinta pada kucing. Bukan itu sahaja, sebelum berkahwin dengan Budin, Gayah sudah sedia ada membela seekor kucing siam.

Maka dari hari ke hari, bertambah benci dan meluatlah Budin pada kucing terutama si Tompok, kucing siam peliharaan isterinya. Apa tidaknya, Gayah lebih memberi tumpuan kepada si Tompok dalam kehidupan sehari-hariannya. Hal ini membuatkan Budin beranggapan, Gayah lebih sayang si Tompok berbanding dengan dirinya.

Akibat tidak mahu terus tertekan dengan keadaan ini, Budin membuat rancangan untuk mengusir si Tompok dari hidupnya dan hidup isterinya, Gayah. Maka, bermulalah dengan rancangan jahat Budin.

Pucuk dicita ulam yang mendatang, ketika isterinya sedang asyik mandi, Budin dengan tanpa segan silunya telah menangkap si Tompok, disumbat dalam karung beras M ahsuri. Tanpa berlengah terus merempit motor kapcainya sehingga jauh dari rumahnya , lebih kurang 10 kami lalu dihumbanlah si Tompok tanpa belas kasihan. Dengan hati gembira, baliklah dia ke rumah dengan siulan mengikut renta k lagu"Cindai" nyanyian Siti Nurhaliza.

Tapi, kegembiraan hanyalah sementara bila tiba di rumah si Tompok dengan sombong bongkaknya melanggok depan pintu lagaknya menyambut kepulangan Budin. Sakitnya hati Budin tak dapat digambarkan.
Besoknya, Budin meneruskan rancangan jahatnya. Kali ini lebih jauh dibawa si Tompok, 20 km dari rumahnya. Tetapi seperti semalam Tompok berjaya mendahuluinya pulang ke rumah. Budin tidak putus asa begitu sahaja, alang-alang peluk pekasam, biar habis basah sampai ke pangkal lenggan.

Maka nekadlah Budin, kali ini dia bukan sahaja hendak buang Tompok lagi jauh tapi dibawanya Tompok pusing-pusing dahulu. Habis semual jalan ditempuh, sekijap ke kiri, sikijap ke kanan, yang lurus, yang bengkok, segala kona, segala selekoh habis dirempitnya dan akhirnya si Tompok dibuang begitu sahaja.

Selang berapa minit kemudian, Budin menelefon Gayah.

Semalam aku gi London, kami ber tolak dlm pukul 6:45 pagi.sampai pukul
9:00 pagi. Tempat yang pertama kami pergi ialah London Tower Bridge.

Lepas tu kami naik tube ke Trafagar square untuk melawat tempat nya yang cantik.
Di situ ada kolam, patung ikan duyung, patung singa,tugu tentera naik kuda dan tugu King George V.Selepas kami possing sakan kami kemudiannya pergi ke London Eye
tapi tak masuk ke dlm nya.

Lepas pergi London Eye dan kami pergi beli cenderamata seperti postcard dan lain-lain. Kami kemudiannya pergi ke Big Ben pula. Big ben tu ialah jam besar yang akan berbunyi setiap 15 minit. Selepas itu kami pergi melawat House of parliment Kami berehat sekejap di situ sambil makan-makan.Kemudian kami menaiki tube ke Buchingham Palace. Di situ kami dapat melihat Royal Guard sedang berkawat dalam istana tersebut, tapi kami tidak dibenarkan masuk ke istana itu. Tak dapat aku nak kacau Royal guard tu. Nanti bulan Sept baru dibenarkan pelawat masuk ke istana tersebut. Kami kemudiannya berehat di Green park yang tidak jauh dari situ. Kami berehat sekejap sebelum kami balik ke Tower Hill. Di situ aku sempat bermain air terjun dengan hambaly adikku.

Selepas itu kami pergi ke London Mousqe untuk sembahyang. Di situ kami sempat melihat orang Islam di sana membuat demonstrasi anti Israel. Kami kemudiannya bertolah pulang lebih kurang pukul 6.30 petang dan sampai di Coventry pukul 8.30 petang. Aku rasa sungguh seronok pada hari itu.

Dick Whittington

Most English people are familiar with the legend of Dick Whittington and his cat.
The legend is that Dick Whittington, a poor country boy,
came to London with his cat seeking his fortune.
When he reached Highgate Hill, he lost heart and turned
to go back home. Then he heard the bells of London ringing out saying
"Turn again, Dick Whittington, three times Lord Mayor of London."

Now here is the real story of
Richard Whitttington, four times Mayor of London....

He was born in Pauntley, Gloucestershire, sometime around 1350, and was the youngest son of a local landowner. He really did leave his home to go to London but, as far as we know, he didn't take a cat. He was apprenticed as a Mercer - a dealer in cloth. When he had served his apprenticeship he became a member of the Mercers' Company (a medieval guild of merchants) and a wealthy and successful merchant selling luxurious fabrics like cloth of gold to the king.

He was living and trading in London during the turbulent days of Richard II's reign when the king was often at odds with Londoners. The relationship deteriorated to such an extent that a corporate fine of £100,000 (an enormous sum at the time) was levied on the city and the mayor and sheriffs were dismissed, leaving London under direct royal control. Eventually some control was returned to Londoners although the king imposed Richard Whittington as mayor in 1397.

When Richard II was deposed and replaced by Henry IV, Whittington, surprisingly did not suffer too. He was elected mayor for a further three terms, 1397-8, 1406-7 and 1419-20. He also lent King Henry considerable sums of money and, in return, sat on many Royal Commissions. Loans to the king were usually repaid by the king assigning a royal income source to the creditor who could then collect the income until the loan and interest were repaid.

Richard Whittington died in March 1423. His wife had already died and the couple had no children. His estate of £5000 (an amount equivalent to several million now) was used for charitable purposes. These included rebuilding Newgate Prison, the building the first library in Guildhall, work on St Bartholomew's Hospital and establishing almshouses for poor people.

Amazingly, Sir Richard Whittington's charitable bequests are still benefiting people today. The almshouses were entrusted to the management of the Mercers Company who still administers them. Originally they were built on College Hill in the City of London. In the 19th century they were moved to Highgate and then in 1966, the almhouses were rebuilt in Felbridge, West Sussex. Sixty elderly women and a few married couples live in them. The charitable bequest has grown so much over the centuries that in 1822 the work of the trust was extended to cover paying an allowance to people on very low incomes. The beneficiaries of these out-pensions, as they are known, now number 300.

Even if the legend of Dick Whittington is false, perhaps the truth is even more amazing. Richard Whittington survived as a prominent City merchant through turbulent times. Even more astounding, the charitable trust he created nearly 600 years ago is still helping people today.

BAKAL PENGANTIN BARU... Khalid Mohamed Jiwa dan Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin pada sidang media khas selepas mengumumkan tarikh pertunangan dan pernikahan mereka di Kuala Lumpur, semalam.

KUALA LUMPUR 17 Julai – Penyanyi nombor satu negara, Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, 27, dan Datuk Khalid Mohamed Jiwa atau Datuk K, 47, akhirnya menamatkan teka-teki mengenai hubungan mereka apabila kedua-duanya mengumumkan tarikh pertunangan dan pernikahan serentak pada Isnin, 21 Ogos ini di Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan, Jalan Duta di sini.
Pasangan sehati sejiwa itu pada satu sidang akhbar khas di sebuah hotel di sini turut memaklumkan, mereka sepakat memilih tarikh berkenaan bagi memperoleh keberkatan sempena Israk Mikraj yang jatuh pada hari sama.
Majlis persandingan pula akan berlangsung seminggu kemudian iaitu pada 28 Ogos di Pusat Konvensyen Kuala Lumpur (KLCC).
Tarikh itu secara kebetulan merupakan hari ulang tahun ke-38 perkahwinan ibu bapa penyanyi itu, Tarudin Ismail dan Siti Salmah Bachik.
Pasangan itu akan turut diraikan di rumah pengantin perempuan di Kuala Lipis, Pahang pada Ahad, 3 September ini.
Sidang akhbar hampir satu jam itu berlangsung dalam suasana agak ‘kecoh’ apabila Siti Nurhaliza dan kekasihnya yang berpakaian sedondon berwarna jingga kekuningan dihujani soalan bertubi-tubi.
Keadaan diburukkan lagi apabila sebilangan besar jurugambar mengeluh ekoran kesukaran mendapatkan sudut terbaik kerana dewan yang agak sempit dan panas dipenuhi hampir 250 tetamu dan wakil media.
Pada sidang akhbar itu, Siti Nurhaliza cukup berahsia ketika ditanya kriteria tertentu membuatkan beliau tertawan kepada Datuk K.
“Biarlah perkara-perkara yang membuatkan Siti tertarik kepada Datuk Khalid menjadi rahsia. Namun salah satu daripadanya yang boleh Siti kongsi bersama dengan anda semua adalah kasih sayang beliau terhadap empat anaknya, itu yang membuatkan Siti kagum,’’ ujar beliau.
Keempat-empat anak Datuk K hasil perkongsiannya dengan bekas isteri, Tengku Zawiyah Tengku Izham ialah Mohd. Anas, 19; Mohd. Adib, 16; Mohd. Ashraf, 14 dan Mohd. Azif, 8.
Selain ibu bapa Siti, anak ketiga ahli perniagaan itu, Mohd. Ashraf turut hadir pada sidang akhbar tersebut ditemani kakak Datuk K, Zaiton Mohamad Jiwa.
Datuk K pula ketika diajukan soalan serupa, secara ringkas berkata, ‘‘Siti Nurhaliza adalah seorang yang istimewa’’.
Penyanyi tersohor itu turut menyatakan, keputusan memilih Datuk K sebagai pasangan hidup dibuat selepas berfikir secara mendalam selain mendapat petunjuk Allah s.w.t.
Siti Nurhaliza turut diuji dengan soalan ‘nakal’ mengenai penerimaan anak-anak Datuk K terhadapnya selepas berkahwin kelak.
Penyanyi itu bagaimanapun bijak menjawab dengan menyatakan beliau akan mencuba sedaya upaya menjadi ibu yang baik kerana perkahwinan tersebut bukan melibatkan Datuk K semata-mata tetapi turut melibatkan keluarganya.

Beliau menangkisnya dengan menyatakan, setiap pasangan perlu berbalik kepada amalan agama dan yakin bahawa jodoh pertemuan dan ajal maut ditentukan oleh Allah s.w.t.
Ketika ditanya mengapa mengambil masa begitu lama membuat pendedahan pada media, Siti Nurhaliza menyatakan, bukan niat mereka berahsia tetapi mereka memilih tarikh sesuai selepas mengadakan perbincangan mendalam dengan keluarga kedua-dua belah pihak.
Siti Nurhaliza turut ditanya bila beliau mula menjalin hubungan intim dengan duda beranak empat itu.
Penyanyi itu menyatakan, mereka mula rapat selepas pulang dari mengadakan persembahan di Royal Albert Hall, London, April tahun lalu.
Suasana sidang akhbar yang pada mulanya hangat turut diselitkan dengan soalan-soalan peribadi termasuk panggilan Siti Nurhaliza kepada Datuk K dan lokasi mereka akan berbulan madu.

Every year, more then 400,000 American deaths are attributed to smoking. It’s banned in restaurants, workplaces and other public areas. It’s illegal for cigarettes to be sold to anyone under 18. Yet even with all the loss of customers by death, tobacco companies still manage to make a profit. How do they do it? There are numerous laws against smoking. In 1998, a law passed that made it illegal to smoke in bars. An internal Philip Morris document states, "[The] financial impact of smoking bans will be tremendous - three to five fewer cigarettes per day per smoker will reduce annual manufacturer profits a billion dollars plus per year." In an effort to keep their customers smoking, the companies trick the public with lies and loopholes. Their goal is to slow the antismoking movement and keep people smoking—to get more profits.
What about the health of non-smokers? Reports from 1993 state second-hand smoke causes lung cancer and respiratory diseases. The same findings have been concluded by a hundred other major studies, and still the tobacco industry says the results are flawed.
A Philip Morris inside report from 1987 discussed how anti-smoking movements and price increases prevented 600,000 teens from taking up smoking. In 1979, a memo noted that “Marlboro dominates in the 17 and younger age category…” and in ’78 “…the base of our business is the high school student…”. Even with these companies’ lies and tricks to get around antismoking laws, they still try to sell their products to children. Who could blame them, considering their product kills more than 2,000 of their American customers a day? They need to replace these consumers quickly, and what easier way to do so than convince impressionable teens that smoking is the ‘cool’ thing to do? Hey, it keeps the profits coming!
Antismoking movements are just beginning to be heard. With a product that kills more Americans than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, murders, suicides, illegal drugs, and fires combined, no law can be too strict. So, when you see a tobacco ad, are offered a cigarette, or have the choice whether or not to smoke, remember that tobacco companies are greedy money-grubbers. No matter who you are, you’re just another dollar sign in the eyes of Philip Morris.
Smoking Kills is for the nonsmokers of the internet. Life is too precious to waste it on something so silly as Tobacco.So please stop smoking!!

the Canadian chanteuse returns with Under My Skin but if you're

This is not a girl who rests on her laurels.Under My Skin opens

with the dramatic tracks "Take Me Away" and "Together," which set the scene for

the kick-ass guitars and radio-ready chorus of "Don't Tell Me," a song of

willful female empowerment that picks up where "Complicated" left off.

From there it's a one-two punch of three-chord guitar licks ("He Wasn't")

and head-bopping optimism ("Who Knows") alongside swirling,

brooding melodies ("Freak Out") and moody tracks ("Forgotten," "Nobody's Home")

that reveal a darker side of Avril Lavigne."I grew up so much in the past two years,

" admits the Napanee, Ontario, native. "I've been through a lot, I've learned

a lot, and experienced a lot both good and bad. These songs are about all of that,

and each is very personal to me." Working with producers, Butch Walker

(of the Marvelous 3), Raine Maida (of Our Lady Peace), Don Gilmore

(Linkin Park, Pearl Jam), Avril co-wrote the dozen introspective songs on

Under My Skin in near secrecy. "I'd just come off my world tour and got back

to Toronto and was writing right away," the 19-year-old says.

"I had no idea what I was going to do. No one did.

People wondered if I'd run out of things to write about,

but it was the opposite."After a lunch date with fellow Canadian

singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk turned into a major chick-bonding session,

Avril and Chantal sat down to write. The chemistry was ineffable.

"We got together one night and all of a sudden we had a song," she says.

"No one knew what I was up to, not my management, not my label.

" The duo got together the next night and wrote another song.

"We did that for two weeks and wrote 12 songs."

Momentum took over and by summer Avril was moving into Chantal

and her husband Raine Maida's Malibu house to record.

"I was only off my tour for a couple of weeks, and I was ready to record,

" Avril recalls.The California air provided a needed escape from Avril's frantic life.

"It was a great time for me, living out there, being out of the public eye,

and having my independence. And my friendship with Chantal

evolved into one of the best I've ever had." Chantal and Avril would spend all

night in the studio perfecting the songs. During the day, Avril learned the city

by driving to and from the studio and where ever she needed to be.

No photos, no interviews, no pressure. Eventually they recorded

most of the songs in Raine's studio, andthose songs appear

unaltered on Under My Skin. The rest of the tracks,

co-written with her guitarist Evan Taubenfeld

(and one track with former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody),

were cut just up the road. "I was involved in every aspect of making this record.

I'm very hands-on," she says. "I knew how I wanted the drums, the guitar tones,

and the structures to be. I understand the whole process so much better

this time because I've been through it. I'm really picky with my sound.

"Picking favorites out of her 12 hand-made babies is another matter.

"They all mean so much to me, but I love 'Together,' which is all

about being in a relationship and knowing it's not right. It's a song

that basically says, it's not working out honey." A couple of other

tracks mine dysfunctional relationships and have hooks as catchy as

those on "Complicated" and real-life narratives (like "Sk8er Boi"),

but what truly underscores Avril's growth are the more positive tracks,

such as "Who Knows" and "Take Me Away." "I guessthat's just the way

that I am now," admits the former supposed attitude junkie. Deep,

piano-driven tracks like "Together" and "Forgotten"

reflect Avril's growth, maturity, and change since the release of Let Go.

"I'm happy with what I'm doing and have faith that everything is

going to work out for the best." She's also found a feminine side to

offset her well-publicized tomboyishness. "I'm such a chick.

I'm a hopeless romantic, and surprisingly old-fashioned," Avril laughs.

"That's why I wrote a song about not giving it up to just any guy

["Don't Tell Me"]." Girly quirks aside, Avril is anxious to get the show on the road.

"It feels so good to be singing new songs," she says. "I feel refreshed and

I'm looking forward to the next thing."Optimistic or melancholic,

Avril's two year wild-ride on the rock-star express has shaped her

world view and taught her a whole lot about balance. "The songs on Under

My Skin are definitely deeper than those on Let Go," she says, "But I still love a

Their hopes are dashed, however, when David Beckham's

England beat Paraguay 1-0 thanks to an own goal in their World Cup opener in Frankfurt.
Carlos Gamarra put David Beckham's left-wing free-kick past his own keeper to set up a half dominated by England. It was a different story in the second half as Paraguay threatened more as a cautious England put themselves under unnecessary pressure. Frank Lampard came closest to extending the lead with two long-range efforts as the South Americans pressed for a draw. England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will be happier with the points than the performance. But England will not complain, and rightly so with their history of making slow starts to major tournaments. Steven Gerrard, as expected, was declared fit after a back injury to give England a full-strength side apart from Wayne Rooney. And if they needed a lift in the searing heat, it came after only three minutes courtesy of Beckham's free-kick. England's captain swung in the set-piece and it glanced off the head of Gamarra and beyond the despairing dive of keeper Justo Villar. England coach Eriksson has plenty to ponder after a lacklustre display Villar's afternoon got worse two minutes later when he was injured making a clearance and limped off with what looked like an ankle injury. His replacement, Aldo Bobadilla, did not fare much better, and was penalised for time-wasting, only for Lampard to fail to take advantage of the free-kick 15 yards out. Nelson Valdes was a threat to England, and he shot wide after a slip by John Terry - with Gerrard shown a yellow card for a tackle as the Paraguayan shot. England were in confident mood and Bobadilla saved from Lampard as they dominated proceedings, Beckham also shooting narrowly off target. But Paraguay grew in confidence and goalkeeper Paul Robinson was glad to see another shot from Valdes fly narrowly wide on the stroke of half-time. England were subdued after the break, and Eriksson decided to make a change after 55 minutes, sending on Stewart Downing for a subdued Michael Owen. Paraguay were gaining heart from the fact that Eriksson's side had not killed them off, and Roberto Acuna gave England an anxious moment on the hour with another shot just off target. England's response was a cross-shot from Beckham that flew across the face of goal, and an effort from the lively Joe Cole that was dragged wide. Paraguay had possession without mounting a serious threat, and Lampard could have doubled England's advantage, only to be denied by two fine saves from Bobadilla. England held on to deservedly pick up three points, but there will undoubtedly be tougher tests ahead.

EMMA WATSON

Prior to landing the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson had only appeared in school plays. She had also taken first place in a school poetry recital at age seven, but had never acted professionally. Emma was up against stiff competition for the much-coveted role, as literally thousands of young actresses, many with much more experience, auditioned for the part. After 11 auditions, she finally won the role.
Now that she has experienced working in a film, Emma would like to appear in other roles as well. She said in an interview, "I'd like to play some American high school girl. I want to play something totally different. I want to play every kind of character and every point of view, but I'm probably going to be playing Hermione for a while."
Emma admits to having been a Harry Potter fan before landing the role. Signed to play bossy Hermione (Her-my-own-nee) in the first three films, she has expressed interest in continuing on in more. However, when asked about kissing her co-stars in future films, she replied, "Oh my God, no, no chance, no chance. That's not in my contract!" However, she finds kissing toads not quite as disgusting as kissing boys, as she revealed that when she had to do a scene in the first film where a boy asks her, "Do you want to kiss Trevor goodnight," meaning his toad, she was supposed to give him a scornful look, but kept bursting into laughter.
Proving that she’s as feisty as her character, she told a reporter who asked her if she always wore pigtails, "I never wear pigtails, I wear PLAITS."
Emma’s lawyer parents are divorced, and she and her younger brother Alex live with their mother and their two cats, Bubbles and Domino. She enjoys playing field hockey and tennis.
